Hi Herb & Lynn,

I wanted to send a few fun updates of our Maisy girl. Today Maisy is a week shy of 8 months. We have been weighing her every two weeks and this week she is weighing in at a whopping 69lbs! Looks like this little girl is definitely going to pass up her mother in size.

She’s now been to the Smokey Mountain National park twice. She’s taken several hikes which she really enjoys. We even took her into Gatlinburg for walk around town. We couldn’t make it a few feet without people wanting to say hi and commenting on how cute she was. She did great meeting everyone and she was definitely the talk of the town, must get it from her mom :)

She is an absolute master at fetch with sticks and toys which I’m incredibly thankful for. It’s so easy to tucker her out quickly. She is proving to be incredibly athletic. The way she bounds across our yard is amazing. She will even run so fast that when her rope/ball toy bounces on the ground she’ll catch it in mid air. Also she can catch a frisbee mid air! I really need to look into agility, water retrieving, or other athletic activities for her.

She continues to be a very non-reactive dog. She barks VERY infrequently and if she does bark you know something is up. While she doesn’t react to much you can tell she has incredible hunting skill. She locks on to scent and sees every little animal that passes by, even small butterflies. I’ve started playing games in the house hiding kibble in different places to exercise that part of her brain. She even does this lion like crouch and prowl when you have a toy in the distance and she knows you’re going to throw it.

The only challenge we’ve had with Maisy was with nipping. We found a few solutions that seem to have made huge improvements. The three tactics we’ve used were praising kisses and saying no to bites, gently closing her muzzle if she bites and saying no bite, and redirecting her attention to commands like sit and down to stop the behavior. Also I realized that much of her nipping was due to her not getting enough exercise when we had busier days. So we’ve really amped up the amount we exercise her to make sure she isn’t wound up. Thankfully the nipping issues has almost completely gone away. I definitely forgot how much energy puppies have but thankfully we do have a few acres to run her on!

Even with the nipping you could tell underneath she has a super sweet and loving heart. She is a master at cuddles and completely leans into get affection. As the months go by you can see her enjoying cuddles, pets, and scratches more and more instead of going crazy with excitement. She also is great with meeting people, especially inside the home.

Our smart little girl has regrettably learned how to open doors but thankfully only if they open away from her.
She is incredibly intelligent. From just 4-5 months old she was already alerting me to go outside and go potty by going to the front door and whining. She has continued the alert and is now fully house broken with very minimal accidents.

We are still working on acclimating her and the cat. If the cat runs across the room instinctively she does chase her but she’s never tried to bite or harm the cat. It seems like really all she wants to do is play. She even tries to give her, her toys. We’ll see how their relationship continues to progresses with time.

I hear from one of your other customers on an AB Facebook group that you have your hands full with a few new litters of puppies. I hope everything is going well with you both. As usual I’m loving my girl and I’m incredibly proud to have an American Bulldog from Laura Kennels.

Sincerely,
Megan
